This is my ninth year at L'Etoile du Nord French Immersion and I am very excited to be here. The rich culture in our school makes it a wonderful place to be, and I like to call it "my second home." I am proud to be a part of such a supportive, nurturing team of professionals. I live in Saint Paul and had taught K-8 in Minneapolis for three years, before school, after school and in a Kindergarten partnership. Prior to that I taught in Early Childhood for seven years while I was working on my teaching license, which was done through the Urban Teacher Collaborative of Bemidji State University and Metropolitan State University. The practicums took place in various diverse elementary classrooms throughout the Twin Cities.
I am the mom of two boys, ages 25 and 22, so there are never dull moments at home. I love cooking, gardening, sewing and knitting, and in my free time I enjoy marathon canoe training and racing, also skate skiing in the winter months. As a child I grew up in San Francisco and learned my French at the French American Bilingual School. I attended five years of public school in Marin County, California before my family sailed to Hawaii where I went to college for my first time. After living on Maui for sixteen years we moved to Minnesota, where Blake and Sasha were born. My suitcase is packed and I'm ready to travel, as it is in my blood, because I was born in Athens, Greece. I have been to some French speaking countries, such as the Marquesas Islands in 1977, Tahiti in 1986 and 1990, Quebec for marathon canoe races in 1999 and 2000, and France for Winter Holidays Break in 2015; I've been to Auckland, New Zealand for World Championship Outrigger Canoe Races. Also I've been to Shanghai, China in 2004 for Team USA Womens Masters Dragonboat Races; as a member of the Wikiwiki Wahines, we came in first place as National Champions in Chattanooga, Tennessee in July 2010, I have completed the 120-mile Au Sable Canoe Marathon in Michigan six times and I've been a HydraHead Dragonboating in Bemidji for the last nine years, getting Gold six times.
I am chairperson of the Sunshine Committee which supports our staff and school climate. I have taught after school in Extended Day Learning and continue to be a substitute teacher in the Discovery Club. I am passionate about teaching the youngest children, as I feel they are eager, curious and enthusiastic learners. With the parent-teacher partnership in place our students will benefit from this relationship, gathering successes along the way. I look forward to being a part of the beginning of your child's life-long learning adventure!
On Saturday September 17, 2011, I was honored to be part of the DNR Team and race in a Voyageurs canoe, Wilderness Inquiry, in a fundraiser for St. Paul and Minneapolis Public Schools. The event raised over $50,000 so students can participate in enrichment activities such as paddling on the Mighty Mississippi. We came in 2nd place out of 22 Voyageurs canoes. On Sat. Sept. 15, 2012, we did it again, coming in 2nd out of 20 Voyageurs teams. See the trophy in the case in the Upper Campus office!
