Maxfield's School Continuous Improvement Plan

  • Maxfield's School Continuous Improvement Plan will focus primarily on improving students reading and math.  It will also look at the ways we support families.

The table below provides a summary of the Maxfield Elementary School Comprehensive Improvement Plan.  The full plan can be found at http://scip.spps.org/

Reading Goal = Reading skills will increase from 18% proficient to 30% proficient by Spring, 2017.

    Aligned vocabulary instruction

    ●       In order to readily understand a book, students need to know about 90% of the words in it. That's what makes vocabulary learning and retention such a key piece of  reading comprehension.

Use of Close Reading for Differentiated Small Group Instruction and Conferring

    ●      When you close read, you observe facts and details about the text.

    ●      Differentiated instruction  provides your child with books that he or she can be successful with and continue improving reading skills.

    ●      Conferring allows your son / daughter to talk with the teacher about what he/she read and share their insights and thinking.

    Fluency instruction

    ●      Fluency is the ability to read text accurately and quickly.

Examination of student work and utilization of small group instruction in the area of writing to support literacy development

    ●      Looking at each student’s written work and providing instruction for that student in a small group setting.

    ●      Instruction will focus on the skills a student needs to not only improve his/her writing but improve their reading.

Math Goal = Math skills will increase from 23% proficient to 28% proficient by Spring, 2017.

    Math Facts Program

    ●       Basic math facts ( adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) will be taught in a variety of ways using hand-ons strategies.

    ●       Ongoing practice of math facts will result in fluency for the students.

Differentiated math instruction with emphasis on conceptual understanding using Minnesota State math standards

    ●       Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing testing and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.

    ●      Students must learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge.

    ●      Minnesota State Math standards determine which math skills should be taught at each grade level.

    Culture, Climate & Behavior

    Restorative and trauma informed practices

    ●     Fully implement Innocent Classroom strategies

    ●     Purchase literature resources to support restorative practices and development of social skills

    ●     Build ongoing support and time for mindfulness and restorative practices

    ●     Train staff and require school-wide implementation of the Zones of Regulation to support both prevention and de-escalation

Emphasis on creative, critical, and higher order thinking skills and problem solving

    ●      Create a master schedule that provides every K-5 student with regularly scheduled Creative & Critical Thinking and Science specialist classes

    ●      Creative & Critical Thinking and Science specialists will collaborate and work with classroom teachers to develop a Student Digital Portfolio program.

    ●    Each grade level completes a self-directed project that emphasizes creative, critical, higher order thinking, and problem solving during a week-long residency program with Leonardo's Basement
