Soccer en Français
Soccer is not just a game, it is a global phenomenon. Soccer (or in French, "le foot") is the most popular sport in the world. It brings people together, crosses cultures and languages, and promotes team unity.
Soccer is the top sport in many Francophone countries, including France, Belgium and almost all of Africa. During the 2023-2024 school year, L'Etoile du Nord partnered with Romain Métanire's Soccer Star Academy to provide students an after-school soccer program in French and taught using the French Soccer methodology.
For those who don't know, Romain Métanire is a professional soccer player who was born in France. He is the first Major League Soccer player of Malagasy descent. He has previously played in France for FC Metz and Stade de Reims, in Belgium with KV Kortrijk, and on the Madagascar national team. Since moving to the U.S., he has played for Minnesota United and is now with Spokane Velocity.
During the spring, participating students met after school with a member of Métanire's training group and learned soccer skills while speaking and listening to French. The program is open for 6-8 year olds (Little Kickers) and 9-11 year olds (Rising Stars).
